World Environment Day, 5 June 2011
Barge Program staff were invited to help plant 84,000 trees at the Asom Wiwek Buddhist Meditation Center in Chaiyapum Province. The temple was celebrating Pa Ba ceremony and World Environment day.
It was an amazing sight as nearly one thousand people, mostly dressed in white, headed to the hillside. Within a few hours, approximately ten thousand native species trees and fruit trees had been planted. Imagine helping to plant a forest!
After the tree planting, Barge staff ran a series of environmental education activities with a tree theme for local school children, to help them understand the importance of the tree planting and to encourage them to be stewards of their new forest.
