Jetting in from Indonesia the Barge Team met the Year 9 Menatari students at Suvarnabhumi Airport, each student dragging behind them a large wheelie bag ready for their Thailand adventures to begin! They had an action-packed scheduled ahead of them including three days on our floating classroom on the Chao Phraya River with the Barge Program and a week-long trip with the Visiting Schools Program based at our learning community in Chiang Mai.
The goal of the Barge trip was for cultural immersion in Thailand and developing a deep understanding of the relationships between the Thai people and the Chao Phraya watershed. One of the highlights of the trip included interviewing a Buddhist nun at a temple in Ayutthaya which made for an interesting cultural exchange of ideas and beliefs. In addition, the students enjoyed swimming in the river at a quiet and picturesque bay, also a common sight among local Thai children along the banks of the river. One of the most interesting aspects of the trip was comparing and contrasting sights and experiences from their own city of Jakarta and the Ciliwung River with those of the Chao Phraya River.
