Introduction to Thailand,
Appleby College reached the barge, after spending the night at Holiday Inn Bangkok after a late arrival in the early hours into Bangkok. Once all introductions and facilities had been complete, the students went straight into an exploration of Ko Kret a manmade island just outside of Bangkok. Whilst on the island students explored the sustainability compass, as well as participating in a pottery class themselves. The day also saw an introduction to Buddhism the largest religion in Thailand and prepped lotus flowers for alms giving the next day.
Day two was a busy day and an early start of 5:45am to give alms at Wat Niwet temple. Students prepared a meal of garlic pork, fruit, soy milk and a lotus flower. Once on Land we entered the temple grounds where the monks were walking ready to receive alms from us. After we gave offerings to the monks we were then blessed by the monks themselves. Students described this experience as new, nerve racking and exciting.
Once the barge had set sail again we investigated a plant which is plentiful in the Chao Phraya River, Water Hyacinth. Students found out how it reached Thailand and what its uses were in and out the river, as well as who it plays home to. This activity involved students getting their hands dirty and finding macro invertebrates which live upon this plant. Sailing up to Ayutthaya we finally arrived at Wat Panon Chern, where the students explored the big Buddha and Wat Chai Wattanaram, where some guided imagery poetry was created. The evening activities saw some teamwork in the form of a stepping stones game.
The final day for Appleby College, upon our beautiful barge. The first activity of the day saw the students undertake a simple Thai lesson from one of our staff. This lesson helped the students purchase breakfast at a local Thai market, which was enjoyed by all buffet style. After the local market it was time to sail back to Riverine Condo where Appleby College climbed into vans to continue their Thailand experience in Chang Mai.
Thank you Appleby College see you again soon .
